These are brown eggs from chickens or Bantam chickens. The design is waxed right on the color of the shell; no dye is used. The egg is then placed in an acid bath for several seconds at a time and the shell scrubbed away as it is etched off. The wax is removed and the egg sealed with a protective coating. Most are already fitted with a gold cord or colored ribbon; they are marked with an H for hanger. Any colored egg can be etched like those of pheasant and darker duck eggs. The darker the shell, the more dramatic the design. White eggs can be etched but the design will not show up as well unless the background is dyed.
